Frequently Asked Questions

General

Getting Started

Is the consultation really free?

Yes. We come to your home or business, measure every window, bring fabric and finish samples, and leave you a written quote. There’s no charge and no obligation.

Do I need to measure my own windows?

No. Measuring is part of the consultation and it’s our responsibility — every shade and blind is made to the measurements we take, so the fit is on us.

How much do custom blinds and shades cost?

It depends on the window sizes, the product, the fabric and whether you motorize, so we don’t publish flat prices. Every quote is free and follows an in-home measure, so the number you receive is the number you pay.

Measuring and Installation

How long does it take from quote to installation?

Lead times depend on the product and fabric. We confirm the schedule when we quote, and the same team that measured installs — no gaps, no crooked lines.

Do you install what you sell?

Yes. Signature Shades designs, makes and professionally installs every window treatment we sell. Installation is included in your quote.

Custom Roller Shades

Can roller shades be room-darkening?

Yes. Roller shades come in fabrics from sheer and light-filtering through to full blackout. Choosing the fabric is part of the consultation.

Can I get roller shades with a valance?

Yes — a valance or fascia hides the roll at the top for a finished look. It’s one of the most common add-ons we install.

Custom Roman Shades

What are roman shades?

Roman shades are fabric shades that lift in soft, even folds. Ours come in light-filtering and blackout fabrics, and can be manual or motorized. They bring the softness of drapery with the clean lines of a shade.

How do roman shades work?

A lift system — cord, cordless or motor — raises the fabric so it stacks in horizontal folds at the top of the window. Lowered, the fabric lies flat for full coverage.

How do I measure for roman shades?

You don’t have to — measuring is part of our free in-home consultation. We measure every window ourselves before anything is made, so fit is our responsibility, not yours.

Custom Cellular Shades

What are cellular shades?

Cellular (honeycomb) shades are made from fabric cells that trap air. Ours use a 3/4" single-cell fabric in light-filtering and blackout options. The cells add insulation, cutting heat gain in summer and heat loss in winter.

Do cellular shades insulate?

Yes — that’s their main advantage. The honeycomb structure creates an insulating layer at the glass, which helps reduce heat gain and makes rooms more comfortable year-round.

Are cellular shades out of style?

No. They remain one of the most popular shades because they work: clean lines, excellent light control, and real energy benefits. They pair well with modern and traditional rooms alike.

How do you clean cellular shades?

Regular light dusting or a gentle vacuum with a brush attachment keeps them fresh. For spots, dab with a damp cloth — don’t soak the fabric. We’ll cover care for your specific fabric at installation.

Custom Zebra Shades

What are zebra shades?

Zebra shades (also called Vision, dual, banded or day-night shades) alternate sheer and solid fabric bands on a continuous loop. Align the solids for privacy or the sheers for filtered daylight — and anything in between.

Are zebra shades good for privacy?

With the solid bands aligned they give full privacy; with the sheers aligned they let in soft light while still limiting the view in. They’re a strong choice for living rooms and offices.

Faux Wood Blinds

Faux wood vs real wood blinds — which should I choose?

Faux wood costs less, resists moisture and won’t warp, yellow or crack, which makes it the better choice for kitchens, bathrooms and sun-facing rooms. Real wood is lighter, so it suits very wide windows, and its natural grain is hard to match. We carry both.

Do faux wood blinds yellow over time?

Ours are 100% ultraviolet controlled, which means they won’t yellow. They’re also anti-static, so they hold less dust.

Retractable Exterior Screens

What can Zipscreen enclose?

Pergolas, verandas, porches, balconies and garages — any opening where you want protection from sun, wind, rain and insects without giving up the view. Systems can be made in widths up to 23' and drops up to 16'.

How is Zipscreen different from an awning?

Zipscreen is a cable-guided, zip-edged screen that locks into side channels, so it stays taut in wind and seals against insects. It’s a sleeker, more secure and more durable alternative to traditional awnings and outdoor roller shutters.

Outdoor & Patio Shades

Are Veue outdoor shades weather-resistant?

They’re designed for outdoor living with high-performance fabrics that handle sun, heat and glare while preserving your view and airflow. We’ll advise on the right fabric for your exposure.

Can outdoor shades be motorized?

Yes. Motorization by Somfy and RollEase Acmeda is available across our outdoor range, including remote and app control.

Product

Motorized Shades

Are motorized blinds worth it?

For hard-to-reach windows, large or multiple windows, and anyone who wants to set schedules or control shades by voice, yes. Motorization also removes cords, which is a safer choice around children and pets. We’ll show you the options at your free in-home consultation and only recommend it where it earns its place.

How are motorized shades powered?

Three ways: rechargeable battery motors (the most common for retrofits — no wiring), hardwired motors (planned into new builds or renovations), and, in some cases, solar-assisted charging. Our Somfy and RollEase Acmeda motors cover all three; we recommend the right one for each window.

Do motorized shades need to be plugged in?

Not usually. Battery motors run for months between charges and recharge from a standard outlet with the supplied cable. Hardwired motors are wired in once and never need charging.

Can my existing blinds be motorized?

Sometimes. It depends on the product, its headrail and its age. Bring the details to your consultation and we’ll tell you honestly whether a retrofit makes sense or whether a new motorized shade is the better value.

How much do motorized shades cost?

It depends on the window size, the fabric, the motor and how many shades are controlled together, so we don’t publish a flat price. Every quote is free and follows an in-home measure, so the number you get is the number you pay.
